FITTING A CAP

FITTING A CAP

Into a morning meeting. Out across a wet field.

ㅤ

Close all the way round. Easy at the temples. Still in the wind.

ㅤ

The one you reach for without thinking.

How a cap should fit

ㅤ

ㅤ

A well fitted cap sits level on your head, not perched on top & not sunk down over the ears. The band rests about a finger's width above your eyebrows & clears the tops of your ears. It should hold your head evenly, with no single point taking the pressure. Nothing pressing at the temples, no empty gap at the back.

Three checks. A finger slides under the band without forcing it. A shake of the head does not shift it. After an hour, your head doesn't begin to ache.

How our cap is made

ㅤ

ㅤ

ㅤ

We make our cap in four sizes, from 55 to 58cm, from their own graded patterns. Every panel being cut slightly larger or smaller within millimetres, so the whole cap sizes up & down evenly, the full way around.

There is nothing to adjust. The back closes with an elasticated rear coil, which holds the cap close without bunching the cloth & vicing it to your head.

We leave the crown unstructured, with no stiffening at the front, so it settles more to the shape of your head after every wear. The cloth is a tightly woven wool & cashmere, double lined & naturally water resistant. Six panels are joined with tone on tone stitching, & a cotton sweatband holds the cap in place.

The caps took two years of drafts, tests & samples. We began with 55 and 57cm, then added 56 & 58cm so fewer heads fall between two sizes. There is more on the cloth we chose in The Cap.

How to measure your head for a cap

ㅤ

ㅤ

ㅤ

ㅤ

It takes two minutes & a soft tape measure otherwise a piece of string & a ruler will do.

ㅤ

ㅤ

ㅤ

ㅤ

ㅤ

ㅤ

Measure with your hair as you usually wear it.

  1. Wrap the tape around your head with it running a finger's width above your eyebrows, just above your ears and around the fullest part at the back.
  2. Keep it level and snug, without pulling tight.
  3. Read the measurement in centimetres where the tape meets. With string, mark the point and lay it flat along a ruler.
  4. Measure twice. If the readings differ, measure again and use the middle or repeating measurement.

FINDING YOUR SIZE

ㅤ

Match your measurement to the size below.

55   XS

56   S

57   M

58   L

The elasticated back picks up a little of the slack, but nothing can add room at the temples. A new cap should feel close from the first day, never tight.ㅤ
